The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is administered jointly by the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) and the seven Indian Institute of Technology (IITs). The operations are managed by the eight zonal centres and the Organizing Institute will be responsible for the overall coordination and process of the institutes. Every year one Institute is given the responsibility of conducting the Test.

GATE tests the subject ability of the candidates in Engineering / Architecture / Technology / Science. The score is utilized to seek admission into post graduate programmes in M.E., M. Tech and Ph.D. in IITs and IISc funded by the MHRD and Government agencies. The score is useful for employment in Public and Private Sector Undertakings.

The paper has 65 objective type questions for a total mark of 100
Every Multiple Choice Question gets two marks
There is no sectional cut off
The General Aptitude (GA) comprises of 10 questions and is compulsory for 15 marks, and this section is mandatory for all candidates.
Moreover, the questions are common for all candidates taking GATE.
One mark is awarded for five questions and for the other five questions two marks are given making it a total of 15 marks.

General Aptitude = 15% of the total

Technical subject = 70% of the total
Negative markings are applicable and are indicated as 1/3 marks is cut for the wrong answer to 1 Mark question.
2/3 mark is cut for the wrong answer for 2 marks question.
However, there are no negative marks for not attending the question.
Similarly, for numerical questions, there are no negative marks.
